General Plans

In addition to plans for communities, the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission also works with Montgomery County residents to develop an overall vision for the County. The foundation of general planning for the last three decades is the "Wedges and Corridors" concept first developed in the early 1960s.

The Wedges and Corridors name comes from the regional land use pattern it recommends. It channels growth into development corridors while at the same time, wedges of open space, farmland, and lower density residential uses are preserved.

Periodically this 1964 document is updated and amended. The most recent refinement was completed in December 1993. It does not replace the 1964 General Plan but reaffirms the Wedges and Corridors emphasis and replaces the guidelines that were expressed in a 1969 update of the General Plan.
